01The problem
A global network of researchers runs hundreds of webinars, reading groups and conferences a year, organised by volunteers around the world. Proposing an event, getting it approved, budgeting it and reimbursing speakers all happens on the site — which carries years of content and dozens of plugins that can't be allowed to break.
02What I did
- 01Work as the site's developer on a monthly retainer: new features every month, plus a monthly TechOps cycle — WordPress core, theme and plugin updates, testing, backups and security checks.
- 02Look after an event system built on The Events Calendar — 1,700+ events, 560+ series and 750 venues — with custom event fields and application forms.
- 03Support the organizer workflow end to end: propose a project, get a coordinator's approval, request a budget, claim speaker reimbursements and email attendees, built on Gravity Forms and custom plugins.
- 04Custom plugins for working groups, a member directory and per-member notification settings.
- 05An interactive Mapbox map of members and in-person events worldwide, filterable by date and tuned for touch on phones.
03Result
Organizers keep running events on the platform month after month while it stays current, secure and fast — with new features shipping alongside the upkeep rather than instead of it.
